Biking the 395 Biking Mammoth Lakes

Shady Rest Park Mountain Bike Ride

About the ride...

The Easy Ride

Start from the entrance of Shady Rest Park off Hwy. 203. Pickup the paved bike paths to the ball fields. Riders will head east on the dirt single track that skirts the fence behind the ball field. The single track ends at a junction of dirt roads. From there the riders will take the road leading back to Sawmill Road. They will cross Sawmill and pickup the dirt single track that parallels Sawmill and head south-west towards Town. The trail ends shortly before Hwy. 203. Riders will continue along short dirt single track that skirts behind the campground and ends at Forest Trail behind the Fire Station. This ride is approximately three miles, with very little elevation gain or loss.

The Intermediate Ride

Same start as the Easy Ride, but after the dirt single track that skirts the perimeter of the ball fields, the trail ends at the crows feet of dirt roads and the ride will take the north spur. After 1/4 to 1/2 mile of relatively flat terrain, another intersection appears and the ride continues on the main road. The road climbs for about a 1/4 mile then levels out and follows the ridge for a mile of rolling terrain. At the "T", turn right and climb another 1/2 mile with a couple of switchbacks. Stay Ieft on the main trail.

When the road Ievels out at the top of the knoll there is a spur to the right where riders will turn and climb the 100 yards or so to "Lookout Rocks." At this point the riders can take a breather and climb up the rocks to get the view of the White Mountains, Long Valley and the Sherwin Range.

Back on the trail, riders will ride back down the spur to the main trail and go right (north) down to Sawmill Road and begin the 1/2 mile climb up the "orange diamond" trail or turn right and head north down the backside of Sawmill, 1/4 mile to the spur on the right. Local riders call this the "Whoop-de-do Downhill." For a mile the trail heads downhill over rolling terrain. At the bottom riders can go left twice and pickup Sawmill Road for the one mile climb back to the top. At the top, turn right and climb the "orange diamond". At the top take the appropriate spurs to end up at the town overlook for another break and viewpoint.

After this the real fun begins-two to three miles of downhill including going down "Heart-Attack-Hill". Approximately 10-15 miles, 1,000 to 1,500 feet elevation gain.
