124trackssm.jpg - 3969 Bytes The top of Mammoth Mountain is not just a place, it's a state of mind. Spanning several miles, the ridgeline affords skiers and riders of all advanced abilities, the opportunity to challenge themselves in progressively more difficult situations. This opportunity is never more clear than when you are looking down some rock lined and doglegging chute, wondering if this is a good idea. People can and do get hurt up here so always be ready to walk away from a big drop or rad line, because part of every challenge is being able to return again, thereby perpetuating the progression of opportunities which are available, which after all is the essence of shredding the top of Mammoth Mountain.

211kiwism.JPG - 6172 Bytes This area has it all, from the 35 pitch of Cornice Bowl to the 50+ pitch of Star Chute. In between you will find solid 40 slopes in the Drop Out and Wipe Out chutes. Nearby, Scotty's is a lower angle 35 bowl that drops over 1,000' into the gentle St. Anton valley. The Noids 40, Philippes 45-50 and Star Chute 50+ progressively up the danger level as you move out the ridge. Traversing off the top is always possible from Scotty's and Cornice Bowl, and there is an intermediate level escape road down the backside of the mountain for those who change their mind.

1212climaxsm.jpg - 6756 Bytes The summit area of Mammoth Mountain is often called The Top of the World. This really isn't the case when the surrounding peaks soar to 12,000' and even 13,000' but the 11,053' summit elevation is plenty high. Mammoth Mountain is a peak that was formed as a volcanic dome and then half the mountain, the north half, blew out in a catastrophic explosion that left a beautiful and dramatic escarpment, that gets buried by snow in the winter. This summit area drifts heavily and some cliffs actually fill in with snow, creating the most dramatic ski runs available from a lift. Runs here vary from the 35 Roma's Run, to the 50 summit area, and down to the 35 Cornice Bowl. Hangman's Hollow is found here as well and the upper pitch can reach 50.

The Left Side

dragonsbacksm.jpg - 9931 Bytes This is the left side ridge that is directly above the length of Chair 9. On powder days, this is the place to be. Starting at the Head Chute, the lines get more dangerous before moderating. Further down the ridge you will find some open gullies and a couple more chutes before you reach the treeline. From here down to the massive cliff that ends the ridge is considered The Tail and offers some super steep tree skiing with some hidden avalanche paths opening up chutes often choked with deep and light powder. Accessing this area is best done from the Upper Gondola when attempting the upper chutes. The Tail can be accessed via the long traverse from Chair 9.
